Where to See Autumn Leaves in Kansai

Information update: November 2, 2026

2026 Kansai maple viewing highlights: Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe and Shiga have different autumn leaf scenery. In addition to the viewing period, reservations at popular temples, night lighting dates and autumn traffic changes will also affect the actual visit arrangements. This article will first help you compare destinations, and then sort out the important information that has been announced this year.

01

Kyoto, Temples and Evening Autumn Foliage

Kyoto offers temple gardens, historic buildings and evening illuminations. Mid-to-late November often draws the most attention, but leaf colors develop at different times in northern Kyoto, the mountains and central neighborhoods.

02

Nara, Yoshino and ancient temples

Mount Yoshino has rich mountain scenery, and Nara Muroji Temple has a limited-time nighttime worship service in autumn. The distance to the attraction, the slope and the temperature in the mountainous area need to be considered.

03

Shiga · Makino Metasequoia Avenue

The straight rows of metasequoia trees are another autumn scene, usually changing color from late November to early December; metasequoias are not maples.

Kansai Autumn Leaves: Comparing Five Regions

If travel time is limited, it is more practical to first choose the type of landscape you like most, and then consider the season and moving conditions, rather than ranking all popular attractions together.

The periods in the table are typical ranges from previous years, not a live forecast for 2026. Event dates do not necessarily coincide with peak leaf color.

Where to Go by Travel Date

Late October to early November

First focus on mountainous areas with higher altitudes and early red spots; Kyoto may not have reached its peak. Even when fall activities begin, green leaves or gradient colors may still dominate.

Mid to late November

Kyoto temple gardens, Osaka Minoh and some attractions in Nara usually enter the more anticipated stage, and it is also a time when reservations and traffic pressure are high. Temples with fixed-date admission are advised to confirm available seats first.

Late November to early December

You can pay attention to the late autumn leaves in Kyoto and Makino Metasequoia Avenue in Shiga. The rows of metasequoias display warm brown and reddish brown tones, which is different from the maple leaves in the temple garden.
