Information update: October 29, 2026 | Wakayama · Kumano Kodo Nakahechi
Let’s look at the conclusion first: For a first Kumano Kodo walk, choose according to fitness, available time and transport. Daimonzaka offers a short introduction to stone steps and ancient cedars. Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha is a half-day option. Experienced walkers comfortable with steeper climbs can consider Takijiri-oji to Takahara. These routes are in different areas and should not be combined as one short outing.
01
Stone Steps Strategy/First Experience
Daimonzaka → Mount Nachi
The ancient trail is about 1 km/about 30 minutes/official difficulty level 1.5
The Daimonzaka Stone Stairs are about 600 meters long, with 267 steps, and there are ancient cedar forests along the way. If you continue to visit Kumano Nachi Taisha, Seigantoji Temple and see Nachi Falls, the entire sightseeing can take about 3 to 4 hours, not just half an hour.
02
Highlights of Nakahechi/Half-day Hiking
Hosshinmon-oji → Kumano Hongu Taisha
About 7.5 kilometers/2 to 3 hours/Official difficulty level 2
Proceed along the mountains, forests and settlements, ending at Hongu Taisha Shrine. The route is mainly downhill with some ups and downs; you usually have to take a bus to the starting point. If you want to really walk a section of the ancient trail but don’t want to walk all day, you can give it priority.
03
There is an uphill slope/need to arrange transfers in advance
Takijiri-oji → Takahara
About 3.9 kilometers/2 to 3 hours/Official difficulty level 2.5
The cumulative climb is about 430 meters in just a few kilometers, so you can’t judge easily by just looking at the distance. There are no direct bus routes from Takahara, so you must arrange a pick-up first, or walk to the Kurisugawa stop.

Completing the stone steps does not mean you have finished visiting the shrines, temples and waterfalls; there are still steps at the back.

Takijiri-oji → Takahara

Cumulative climb is more important than distance; the end connection cannot be a last-minute thought.
Daimonzaka to Nachi Falls: Allow Time for the Steps
You can visit Daimonzaka, Kumano Nachi Taisha, Seigantoji Temple and Nachi Falls in order. The stone steps on the ancient trail are only one section, and there will still be steps along the temple and shrine access roads. Completing the stone steps does not mean that the entire tour has been completed. It is more appropriate to reserve about 3 to 4 hours to connect the temple, waterfall and rest.
Daimonzaka stone steps, please be careful as they may become slippery after rain.
Travelers with young children, knee discomfort, or difficulty in walking up and down stairs can shorten the hiking range and arrange visits to temples and waterfalls separately. Transportation usually takes the Kii Katsuura area as the connecting point, and the starting point, destination point, and return transfer must be confirmed together with the itinerary.
Hosshinmon-oji to Hongu: A Half-Day Walk
This section of Nakahechi, which is about 7.5 kilometers, is characterized by a landscape of mountain forests, tea fields and settlements. The official route information lists a cumulative ascent of about 190 meters and a descent of about 460 meters; the overall route is mainly downhill, but there are still ups and downs and trails. It usually takes about 2 to 3 hours to walk, and you need to arrange time for rest and worship.
Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha
Note the starting point: The Hosshinmon-oji bus stop is not the shrine itself. Walk about 50 meters away from the direction of Kumano Hongu Taisha to reach Hosshinmon-oji, then start walking toward Hongu.
Takijiri-oji to Takahara: A Shorter but Steeper Route
After entering the mountain trail from Takijiri-oji, it quickly goes uphill continuously. Official data lists the total distance as approximately 3.9 kilometers, with a cumulative ascent of approximately 430 meters and a descent of approximately 200 meters; the official difficulty is 2.5. Compared with the trip from Hosshinmon-oji to Hongu Taisha Shrine, it is more necessary to evaluate the leg strength, weather and trail conditions.
Takijiri-oji
Terminal connection: There are no direct bus routes from Takahara. If no pick-up is arranged, you will need to reserve an additional 30 minutes to walk to the Kurisugawa bus stop along National Route 311; this time is not included in the above hiking time.
Planning Connections from Osaka
Daimonzaka is in the direction of Nachikatsuura, and Hosshinmon-oji and Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine are in the direction of Hongu. Both are in Wakayama, but have different entrances and transportation routes. When searching for "Kumano Kodo one-day tour", you should first decide whether you want to go to Mount Nachi or Hongu. It is not advisable to just string the names of attractions together on the same day.
Direction to Mt. Nachi: Use the area around Kii Katsuura and Nachi Station as transportation points, take a bus to the vicinity of Daimonzaka, and then walk the stone steps and shrine route according to your fitness.
Direction of this palace: First confirm the transportation and accommodation to the Hongu Shrine, take the bus to Hosshinmon-oji, and then walk back to Hongu Taisha Shrine.
Directions to Takijiri-oji: You can go to the starting point from Kii Tanabe; there is no direct bus available after reaching the Takahara.
New traffic information for fall 2026: Tanabe City announced that from September 19th to December 10th, an additional Kumano Kodo Express will be opened from Kii-Tanabe Station to and from Hosshinmon-oji, as well as an additional bus from Yunomine Onsen to Hosshinmon-oji. These additional buses are on a first-come, first-served basis, and transportation IC cards such as ICOCA and Suica cannot be used; please check the latest bus schedule and payment method before boarding. Buses may be full in autumn, so flexibility should be reserved for transfers and return trips. After December 10, 2026, please refer to the schedule announced at that time.
One-Day & Overnight Options
One Day: Focus on One Area
If the goal is to have a relaxing experience, it is more feasible to walk to Daimonzaka and visit Mount Nachi than to rush to the main shrine in the morning and then rush to Nachi in the afternoon. Another way is to live near Hongu Shrine, take a bus to Hosshinmon-oji in the morning, walk back to Hongu Taisha Shrine, and then reserve time for worship and rest.
Stay Overnight: Combine Walking with Local Hot Springs
Consider stays at Yunomine Onsen or Kawayu Onsen near Hongu. Longer walks starting from Chikatsuyu or Tsugizakura-oji can exceed 20 kilometers and take much longer than the half-day route. They are not equivalent alternatives for beginners.
Five Checks Before You Walk
Which starting point and which end point to take; whether it is the same traffic area.
In addition to the walking time on the day, how much time is needed for transportation, rest and worship.
Whether there are continuous steep slopes or stone steps; whether it is necessary to change the itinerary when it is slippery after rain.
Whether the mountainous area schedules, accommodation, and temporary closure information have been reconfirmed.
Prepare non-slip shoes, rain gear, and drinking water; in autumn and winter, you need to consider the sunset time and the fact that mountainous areas get darker earlier than urban areas.
Kumano Kodo: Frequently Asked Questions
Can you complete Kumano Kodo in one day?
Kumano Kodo is a network of pilgrimage routes, not a short circular trail. A day visit can focus on a section such as Daimonzaka or Hosshinmon-oji; multi-day treks involve different distances and difficulty levels.
If you have no mountaineering experience, which section is suitable for you?
If you want a short-distance experience, you can start from Daimonzaka; generally, those who are accustomed to walking can take a look at Hosshinmon-oji to Hongu Taisha Shrine. But even on shorter routes, there are stone steps, mountain trails and weather changes, so you still have to judge based on your own conditions.
Can Daimonzaka and Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine be scheduled on the same day?
They are not in the same entrance area. If you are traveling from Osaka on the same day and time is particularly tight, you should first calculate the transportation between the two places instead of just adding up the walking time. When visiting for the first time, it is recommended to choose one area and visit in depth.
